toilet ek prem katha

On Monday, a local court heard out the arguments regarding a case of violation of the copyright act by makers of ‘Toilet – Ek Prem Katha’. Filmmaker Pratik Sharma had brought up a case of copyright infringement against Plan C Studios, which is an alliance between Reliance Entertainment and Friday Filmworks in a Jaipur Metropolitan Court. He placed allegations that the makers have copied the punchline and subject from his movie ‘Gutrun Gutar Gun’.

GD Bansal, advocate for Jaipur-based filmmaker Pratik Sharma said, “Today the arguments remained inconclusive in Jaipur Metropolitan Court and will continue tomorrow too.”

S.S. Hora, counsel of Viacom18 spoke to a leading news agency, “We argued in the court that an idea or a concept cannot fall under Copyright Act and there is no violation of the act. These types of things are already in public domain and no relief should be given to the complainant.” (Also Read: Akshay Kumar has a challenge for everyone! Are you up for it?)

For those of you who don’t know, on July 26, the Jaipur Metropolitan Court had asked the makers of ‘Toilet – Ek Prem Katha’ to file a reply in the copyright case on July 31. Earlier a notice was issued by the court on July 22 which was returnable as a strike by the clerical staff was going on. So, the court announced a new date of July 26 for the respondents for filing their reply.

The movie is helmed by Shree Narayan Singh and stars Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Anupam Kher and Divyendu Sharma in main roles. It will be releasing on August 11, 2017. Recently, there were rumours of the movie getting leaked online, however, Akshay Kumar denied these reports by saying, “Piracy nahi hui, galat baat hai, Crime Branch ne kuch hone se pehle hi use pakad liya tha. (There has been no piracy. Before anything could be published online, the Crime Branch stopped it) Nothing is there online, I would thank the Crime Branch for it.”
