Late Mehmood’s sister, actor-dancer Minoo Mumtaz passes away in Canada

Late Bollywood actor Mehmood’s sister Minoo Mumtaz aka Malikunnisa Ali passed away on October 23 in Toronto in Canada. She lived there with her husband Sayyed Ali Akbar, son, and three daughters. As per a report in Times of India, Minoo was diagnosed with cancer a few days ago, and her health deteriorated.

Her nephew Naushad confirmed the news to the publication. He said, “Since she was old, 80 plus, there wasn’t much to be done. She was one of the loveliest people I had ever met”.

Minoo’s younger brother Anwar Ali, who is also a part of films and now a producer, said in a statement, “Regret to inform that my loving sister Minoo Mumtaz, passed away (in Canada) a few minutes ago… Deep gratitude to the film fraternity, press, media, fans, friends, for decades of love and adulation showered upon her”.

Anwar Ali’s wife, Mona Mathur Ali told indianexpress.com, “Minoo lived in Toronto, Canada for over twenty years. She was not keeping well for a few years and died due to health issues related to old-age. She died around 1.30 am, India time. Her last rites will be done in Toronto itself.”

For the unversed, Malikunnisa was renamed Minoo by actress Meena Kumari, who was Mehmood’s sister-in-law.

Apart from acting, she was also a dancer. Minoo worked in Hindi films like Naya Daur, CID, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam,Taj Mahal, Gaban, Zameer, Bridge, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Alibaba and Ghoonghat among others.
