Following a successful year in the digital realm, including hits like Chamkila and re-releases of classics such as Rockstar, Laila Majnu, and Tamasha, the anticipation for Ali’s upcoming projects has grown among cinephiles.

Reports indicate that Ali is working on a romantic comedy titled Idiots of Istanbul, featuring Fahadh Faasil and Triptii Dimri. However, before diving into that, he will direct a period love story starring Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah. According to sources close to the development, Imtiaz Ali is aiming to take his next on floors by Summer 2025.

“The casting is presently underway. While the male cast is locked in the form of Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah, the casting for the female counterpart is currently in progress. Imtiaz is looking to cast 3 actresses from different generations for this yet-to-be-titled period love story,” revealed a source close to the development.

The source further added that the film will be a period love story but with a contemporary touch in it. “Imtiaz has cracked a tale that merges contemporary elements with the period world, and is excited to embark on a journey of discovery with his next,” the source added.

About the project

The male cast is confirmed, but the search for the female leads is ongoing. Imtiaz Ali aims to bring together three actresses from different generations to align with his vision for the film. A source mentioned that this period love story will incorporate contemporary elements, providing a fresh take on the genre.

Imtiaz Ali is excited about this project, as it represents a new direction for him. He aims to create a narrative that blends traditional and modern storytelling. If casting wraps up by May 2025, he hopes to meet the Valentine’s Day release target. After completing this romantic saga, Ali will shift his focus to Idiots of Istanbul in early 2026.
