Uri attacks have left the country fuming, and the ties between India and Pakistan even more strained than before, if it’s possible. The biggest impact was felt when Pakistani artists were banned from working in Bollywood, and were told to go back to their own country. Everyone in the film industry had something or the other to say on the matter. While some were in support of the ban, there were others who said that art and politics should not be mingled. However, none, made any statement which could remotely be offensive towards our army, the people who guard us day and night, and take bullets so we can sleep at night. Om Puri, the veteran actor, came under fire for one such comment when during a debate on television channel, the actor said that Pak artists should not be blamed for the ongoing attacks, and that for the soldiers who are fighting, no one had forced the lads to join the army, they did so of their own will.
Certainly, the statement did not go down well with many, even those who were supporting the ban. Celebs and commoners alike slammed Puri for the insensitive remark, and even an FIR was filed against him. However, now the actor has come out with an apology for the same.
And now, the actor has come out with an apology on the same. He said, “I am very embarrassed at what I said and I deserve punishment, not forgiveness. I first apologise to his (an Uri attack martyr) family, if at all they will forgive me, I apologise to the whole country, the army. I know it’s not justified that you say so much and then think a sorry will make it right.”
Further adding to his statement, Puri said, “I am guilty and I deserve a punishment. I want to be tried by the army, I should be court-martialled. I want a constructive punishment.”
Well, the damage has been done now, don’t you think, Mr. Puri? We expected a man of your stature and age to speak responsibly.
