After watching Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’, Swara Bhasker wrote an open letter to the filmmaker stating that she felt uncomfortable while watching the jauhar sequence in the climax. Her open letter clearly indicated that she was upset with the Rani Padmavati and other women opting for jauhar, post the deaths of their husbands.
Recently, in an interview with Mid-day, SLB was asked about jauhar scene getting backlash and also about Swara’s open letter, to which the filmmaker stated, “Jauhar, in this context, is an act of war. Our men have died on the battlefield, but the war doesn’t end there. They believe that the Rajputs have been vanquished. But, the women wage the [final] war. They decide that not a single woman or child would be subjugated to rape, or violation. That’s what happened then. So, are people questioning Padmavati’s decision?”
We hope that this answer of SLB clears all the doubts of Swara about the jauhar sequence.
‘Padmaavat’, which stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles, released on January 25, 2018, and is doing a great business at the box office. (Also Read: SLB on not getting much support from industry for ‘Padmaavat’: This is my film, it is my battle)
