Padmavati movie

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has a tendency to lure the audience into his world, by weaving the magic of his story on celluloid. Like us, everyone is looking forward to the release of his upcoming epic period drama ‘Padmavati’, amidst the several controversies around the release of it. It’s been almost a week since the epic love ballad ‘Ek Dil Ek Jaan’ was released. The song showcased the beautiful love moments between the characters of Maharawal Ratan Singh and Rani Padmavati played by actors Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone respectively. The song left us simply spellbound with the magical and regal chemistry between the leads that was brought to screens.

However, there was one particular scene that caught our attention. And it did so, for it gave us a deja-vu feel, that we have captured something similar before, perhaps in the trailer, but when? There is no suspense about the premise of the movie, given it is based on a legend that has been known for years. When after the army’s defeat at the hands of Sultan Alauddin Khilji, it was inevitable that they would be captured, Rani Padmavati along with 16000 Rajput women committed a mass suicide, also known as the custom of Jauhar. And we got a glimpse of the same in the trailer.

And now, coming to the sequence in the song ‘Ek Dil Ek Jaan’. Remember when Deepika brings a white cloth and tells Shahid to apply his hand-prints on the same, using kumkuma? The intensity of their love is expressed so beautifully here. The way they just look at each other, like they are the only two people in the world. And this cloth is what plays an important role in the climax. Yes, this is the same cloth that Deepika aka Rani Padmavati is seen carrying in the climax sequence of the trailer, the image of which we shared above. This was her final tribute to the brave husband that she had, who succumbed fighting to a tyrant ruler. This is the cloth which gives her the strength, the Rajputani that she is, as she is moving ahead without any fear to carry out the Jauhar with the chant of ‘Jai Bhawani’ heard in the background.

Not just this, we can see a glimpse of the same in the first poster of Deepika as well. The scene was already touted to be the one from the climax, given Queen Padmavati was a devotee of Lord Shiva. She could be seen standing in her temple, and contemplating the grave step that she is going to take, that of committing jauhar. We can see that she is wearing the same cloth, which has been woven into her saree.

This certainly proves how immaculate Bhansali has been in bringing the nuances of Rani Padmavati’s legend on screen. We definitely cannot wait to watch this on big screens.

Talking about the film ‘Padmavati’, it also stars Ranveer Singh playing the role of Sultan Alauddin Khilji. The film is slated to release on December 1, 2017.
