Pankaj Tripathi opens up on working with Anurag Kashyap and being stereotyped

After graduating from National School of Drama, Pankaj Tripathi did in small roles in several films. Finally, it was Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (GOW) that became the turning point in Pankaj’s career. Recently on Neha Dhupia’s ‘No Filter Neha’ season 5, Pankaj reminisced working with Kashyap. The supremely talented actor also spoke about how he got stereotyped after the release of ‘GOW’.

Sharing about his experience of working in Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ series, Pankaj said, “Kashyap gives full freedom to his actors. The best thing about him is that once he has cast an actor whom he trusts he let him shape the character in his way. If you end up doing something wrong, then he stops and asks what’s going on. His process of working is very nice and quite interesting.”

Opening about getting stereotyped in the industry post ‘GOW’, the actor shared, “After ‘GOW’ I started getting all similar kind of roles like that of my character Sultan Qureshi. I got a lot of offers to play aggressive and negative roles. After a point, I felt like along with the script the makers will also bring a knife and tell me, ‘Yeh aapki script aur yeh aapka props’.”

Pankaj tried to break away from Sultan’s image by taking up the small yet sweet role in ‘Masaan’.“After GOW, I got a chance to play a small role in ‘Masaan’. Though the part was very small but it was very simple and sweet. So I said yes to that Neeraj Ghaywan’s film as that role was quite different from the roles I played previously. I need excitement to ac. If I am not excited, I would never be able to do justice to my role. Now not even money excites me to take up any role. In the beginning, I did use to take up any kind of films if the money was good. But now apart from name, fame and money that the films bring I also need to enjoy my work,” reasons the actor.

On the work front Pankaj was last seen in ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’. He will be next seen in ‘Ludo’, ’83’ and ‘Mumbai Saga’.
