Payal Ghosh issues an ‘unconditional apology’ to Richa Chadha before the Bombay High Court

A few days back Richa Chadha filed a defamation suit against actress Payal Ghosh for dragging her name while accusing filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of sexual assault. Richa filed the suit before the Bombay High Court for making defamatory statements against her. The actress also sought Rs. 1.1 crores in damages and an apology for the same.

On October 12, the Bombay High Court granted two days time to Richa and Payal to file consent terms for settling the dispute. Today, the court heard the case and according to Live Law, Payal issued an ‘unconditional apology to Richa Chadha before the Bombay High Court in the form of an undertaking and suit is disposed of.’

Richa reacted to it by writing “Done”.

Payal has shared a copy of the apology claiming that it is ‘conditional’. In her tweet, Payal wrote, “These are our conditions in para 3, accepted by plaintiff & her lawyer, so by putting certain conditions in para 3, it becomes conditional apology Jai Hind!! India is intelligent enough to understand wording in consent term, amicable settlement mean no win no lose, only win & win. ((sic)”

On Monday, during the hearing, Payal’s lawyer told the Bombay High Court that she is ready to apologise to Richa provided certain conditions be accepted. Payal’s lawyer Nitin Satpute said, “After settling this matter, the plaintiff (Richa) should not file any criminal case against Payal. After the last hearing, the plaintiff made certain statements to the media saying she has won the case. This has resulted in Payal being trolled on social media. But, we would like to settle the matter.”

Richa also filed a defamation suit against Kamaal R Khan. Live Law tweeted, “The lawyer of Kamaal R Khan, another defendant in Richa’s suit, tells HC that he will not make any public comments against Richa on the basis of defamatory remarks and adds that he will make a public statement to that effect.”
