Vadodara City Police has arrested Shubham Mishra who threatened to rape a stand-up comedian named Agrima Joshua. Shubham was seen sending these rape threats through an outrageous video. The police’s instant action was applauded by most Bollywood celebrities like Swara Bhasker and Pooja Bhatt for taking the correct measures as soon as possible.
Applauding Vadodara city police for their prompt action, Pooja Bhatt wrote on her Twitter handle, “That’s commendable of @Vadcitypolice for taking a strong stand but there are 3 other men who have been targeting #AgrimaJoshua relentlessly with similar videos & threatening her with violence & rape. Can @AnilDeshmukhNCP @NCWIndia please ensure they are booked as well? ?”

I hear you sir. But Let’s sit through it and let’s squirm. Let’s recognise and face what we have become as a society and what we have normalised. Let’s face our complicity in this culture of rampant abuse, misogyny and rape- let’s face it now so we can strive to stop it. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 https://t.co/lBZFCfX7Ct

Pooja Bhatt also tweeted about online threats and abuse, in a series of tweets. She wrote, “Social media or anti-social media?Motivated, misguided or inherently miserable people target those they wouldn’t normally have access to & those who dare go against popular opinion, unleashing abuse & threats.Ignoring them fuels their frustration & makes them direct hate elsewhere.” She also urged that merely ignoring will not suffice.

Not enough to merely ignore or mute any & all aggressive, abusive behaviour one observes. Report, block abusive behaviour towards one & all.We choose who we let into our homes so why permit our social media accounts to be inundated by motivated/misguided/inherently miserable souls?

Criticism is one thing. Abuse quite another. Ignoring abuse seems to fuel those unleashing it to target more people. This has to stop. One can and should agree to disagree but having access to someone on social media doesn’t give anyone the right to make threats & hurl abuse.
