Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Anand to get a remake

This is an era of remakes in Bollywood and every year, several remakes of old classic Hindi movies or adaptations of South or international films are made in Hindi films. Some of them strike a chord with the audience while some don’t. But the remake formula is more or less a successful one as a remake not only guarantees you new audience but also the cult following of the original one who wants to relive the nostalgia of seeing it. And today, there has been a new addition to that list, the 1971 iconic film Anand featuring Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, and this remake will be an interesting one.

This morning, it was announced that the 1971 cult classic is being remade for the modern audience. Sameer Raj Sippy, who is the grandson of the producer of the original film NC Sippy, is backing the project along with Vikram Khakhar. The film is currently at the scripting stage and the makers are yet to zero in on the director and the cast of the film. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan both played such characters in Anand that they are considered iconic till date and it will be interesting to see who steps into their shoes for the remake.

The 1971 original classic was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and told the story of a terminally ill patient, played by Khanna, who is a very cheerful person despite knowing he has six months to live. He lives life to the fullest and makes everyone around him adapt to that lifestyle. His contrasting nature to Bachchan’s Dr Bhaskar Banerjee, gives rise to an unlikely yet beautiful friendship. The end of that movie is still etched in every cinema lover’s mind. The film also featured Sumita Sanyal, Ramesh Deo and Seema Deo.
