Last week, Ram Gopal Varma requested four days to make an appearance before the police. However, he missed his scheduled appearance on Monday. A team from the Andhra Pradesh Police visited the filmmaker’s residence in Hyderabad after he failed to show up for questioning. The case involved derogatory comments he allegedly posted against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his family on social media.
Ram Gopal Varma to be arrested by Police officials
Ongole Rural Police officials arrived at the home of Ram Gopal Varma, anticipating his arrest in connection with the case. Tensions arose when the police discovered that the controversial director was not present, as he had reportedly travelled to Coimbatore. Known as RGV, the filmmaker had previously asked for additional time to appear before the authorities. He faces allegations of damaging the reputations of CM Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Minister for Information Technology Nara Lokesh, among others.
On November 11, police registered a case against Varma based on a complaint from local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ramalingam. The complaint claimed that Varma made derogatory remarks about CM Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and other family members during promotional events for his film Vyuham late last year. Varma is accused of posting objectionable content on various social media platforms. A case was filed against him under Section 336 (4) and 353 (2) of the BNS Act and under Section 67 of the IT Act at Maddipadu police station.
On November 13, police issued a notice to the filmmaker. They instructed him to appear before the investigation officer at Maddipadu police station. Following this, RGV approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which denied his request for interim relief. The court clarified that it could not issue an order similar to bail in response to his quash petition.
Varma sought interim orders that would exempt him from appearing before the investigating officer. But when his counsel mentioned the potential risk of arrest. The judge advised that Varma should file for a bail petition.
