Ram Gopal Varma is known for introducing newcomers. Apart from offering the audience gangster films, he is also known for giving major breaks to talent like Anurag Kashyap, Manoj Bajpayee and Saurabh Shukla to name a few. Even today, the filmmaker introduces new faces in his movies.

In a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble, when he was asked the reason behind his fascination of working with fresh talents, Varma said, “I would put across this way. Like for example, in ‘Sarkar’, Rasheed comes and gives warning to Mr. Bachchan. I thought a guy who is never seen before walking with that kind of confidence rather than if I see an actor who is known to come there. Even in a movie like ‘Satya’ for example, the people because you do not know them well and they look authentic considering the kind of locations I shot. But if take established actors and put them there and for a second if I say there is Shah Rukh (Khan) and Salman (Khan) in Bhiku Mhatre and Satya’s roles, I don’t think the film would remain the same. It might have worked may be better than ‘Satya’ and maybe more successful but, the essence would’ve been lost. One needs to be clear about the purpose of making their film”.

Ram Gopal also said, “When I made ‘Satya’, I never thought of it as an experimental film. I was capturing the people when heavy underworld activities were going on in 1997-98. I just wanted to capture them the way they are. I never thought either of the success or people would like it or not.”

He further said that a true filmmaker shouldn’t care if the audience will like their work or not. “We were living right in the middle of the most serious underworld activity after Gulshan Kumar was killed. I think my very initial thing was just like a realistic action film. But when every day I heard about what was happening, I thought that the inherent drama is so much if you make them as humane as you can, I think the message will be stronger. Films become great by themselves. If I know how to make great films, why will I make flops? We were true to what we were making,” said Varma.
