Rani Mukerji reveals the ‘unfortunate’ reason that made her say no to Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan

Rani Mukerji and Aamir Khan made for one of the most iconic on screen pairs to come out in the 90s. The duo appeared together for the first time in Ghulam. Then they went on to do Mangal Pandey: The Rising. And their latest collboration was in Talaash. However, they were supposed to work on one more film in between, but eventually it couldn’t happen. That film was Lagaan.

Recently, Rani made attended the 54th International Film Festival Of India (IFFI) in Goa. In an interactive session there, Rani spoke about passing on Lagaan and regretting it. She said, “The only film which I could say I was unfortunate that I couldn’t be part of was Lagaan because there was a particular date clash and Aamir was turning producer with the film, and he said that ‘Rani I am shooting this film in a particular way, so I want all my actors in this particular place for 6 months and not move’.”

While Rani really wanted to do Lagaan, she had signed another film prior to it which required 20 days of her shooting. However, Aamir didn’t allow her to travel for that amidst Lagaan shoot. She shared, “I also asked the other producers if they would be okay if I left the film because I would really like to do Aamir’s film, he’s a close friend of mine. But the producer refused to let me go. It was very sad.” Eventually, Gracy Singh went on to do the part that was offered to Rani first.

Lagaan went on to emerge as one of the most successful films in Indian history. Not only did it earn big money on the box office, it also brought in critical acclaim, nationally and internationally. It became only the third film in Indian history to be nominated at the Oscars in Best International Feature Film category. There, it lost the Academy Award by just one vote.

Rani and Aamir’s upcoming films

However, even though Rani Mukerji rejected Lagaan, the duo reunited for Mangal Pandey and Talaash. Personally, their friendship still remains as strong. On the professional front, Aamir was last seen in Laal Singh Chaddha. Next up, he has Sitaare Zameen Par in the pipeline. As for Rani, she gave an impressive performance this year in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway.
