On May 4 this year, filmmaker Sandeep Singh announced his ambitious film on Indian ruler Hazrat Tipu Sultan. He insisted that he wants to show the dark side of the tyrant ruler. However, the announcement brought many threats to him, and consequently, he has decided to shelve the film.
Sandeep Singh shelves Tipu Sultan film
Titled Tipu, the film was to chronicle Tipu Sultan’s tyranny while he was the ruler of Mysore in South India. But taking to Twitter on Monday, Sandeep issued a statement saying he has shelved the film. He wrote, “I kindly request my fellow brothers and sister to refrain from threatening or abusing my family, friends and me. I sincerely apologize if I have unintentionally hurt anyone’s religious sentiments. It was never my intention to do so, as I firmly believe in respecting all beliefs. As Indians, let us forever unite and always give respect to one another! Love, Sandeep Singh.”
The filmmaker received threats right from when he announced the film. Since then, his family has also been dragged into the online threats. Now, to protect himself and his family, and also not to offend anyone’s sentiments, Sandeep has decided to step away.
Tipu’s announcement
In May, Sandeep had made a big announcement for Tipu. He had written a note alongside it, talking about Tipu Sultan’s reign. It read, “I was shocked to learn the true reality of Tipu Sultan. The story gave me goosebumps. This is the cinema I personally believe in. Whether it’s PM Narendra Modi, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Main Atal Hoon or Bal Shivaji – my films stand for truth. I think people knew what a tyrant Tipu Sultan was but chose to ignore it. And this is exactly what I want to showcase on 70mm. Honestly, he doesn’t even deserve to be called a Sultan. I was brainwashed into believing him to be a brave heart as shown in our history textbooks. But nobody knows his malevolent side. I want to expose his dark side for the future generation.”
Meanwhile, Sandeep is backing Swantantrya Veer Savarkar, a biopic on the eponymous freedom fighter. The film has Randeep Hooda in the titular character. It also stars Ankita Lokhande opposite Randeep. He is also backing Atal Bihari Bajpayee’s biopic, titled Atal, with Pankaj Tripathi leading it. Sandeep is making Bal Shivaji with Akash Thosar and a film on Shri Subrata Roy titled Saharasri as well. He has also announced a film with Kangana Ranaut.
