‘Sanju’: Rajkumar Hirani-Vidhu Vinod Chopra open up on propaganda allegations

Filmmakers Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani are few of the most critically acclaimed directors we have in Bollywood. In his fifteen years long career, Rajkumar has worked closely with Vidhu Chopra. Rajkumar Hirani has also given actor Sanjay Dutt two of the biggest hit of his career- ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ and ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’.

Ever since Rajkumar Hirani announced that he is making a film on Sanjay Dutt’s life, stories of his film being made in an attempt to improve the controversial star’s image started doing the rounds. (Also Read: Leaked! Sanjay Dutt and Ranbir Kapoor’s still from ‘Sanju’)

Squashing all the rumours of their film being a propaganda, Hirani, in an interview to India Today said, “If you look at the promo, ‘Sanju’ has clearly said that he kept a gun, he did drugs and he talked about having so many girlfriends. In the journey of making this film, we were constantly asked why are we making this film. Will it be a propaganda film? This was constantly thrown at us. So the teaser was an effort to say that it is not.”

The filmmaker further added,”There is no reason for us to make a propaganda film. You don’t spend three years of your life doing something and destroying your career in the process.”

“He (Hirani) is probably the most successful and able director in India. Why would we make a film where we lose our credibility, that we have built over the years? We won’t sell ourselves,” said Vidhu Vinod Chopra who is co-producing ‘Sanju’.

Ranbir Kapoor will be playing Sanjay Dutt in ‘Sanju’. The film also stars Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Sonam Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal and Anushka Sharma in pivotal roles. The most anticipated film of the year is releasing tomorrow, June 29.
