Searching for Sheela Trailer: Karan Johar presents a glimpse into the documentary of Ma Anand Sheela

The trailer for Searching for Sheela is out and it has already got everyone intrigued. The documentary on Netflix will see Ma Anand Sheela return to India after 30 years and follows her throughout her journey in the country as she opens up on the accusations levelled against her. Searching for Sheela will premiere on Netflix on April 22. The trailer opens with filmmaker Karan Johar welcoming Sheela to India after her serving time. For those unaware, Ma Anand Sheela was the secretary of late godman Bhagwan Rajneesh. She was later branded as a ‘murderer and criminal’ by him. Sheela opened up on what it felt like to be an accused. Sheela spent over three years in the US prisons in the 1980s after being accused of assault. 

Apart from other things, Ma Anand Sheela’s conversation with Karan Johar from 2019 will be an integral part of the movie. Karan has addressed several subjects during his chat with Sheela. He even asked her about her unrequited love for Rajneesh. “He was also very much in love with me,” she said while addressing that question. Karan shared the trailer on social media and wrote, “You’ve seen her, you’ve heard her and you’ve definitely heard about her. Now she’s here to tell you her own story. #SearchingforSheela streaming from 22nd April, only on Netflix.” It can be remembered that Karan had received a lot of flak for interviewing Sheela in 2019.

Speaking about the docu-film, Executive Producer, Shakun Batra in a statement said, “I have always been very intrigued by Sheela’s extraordinary life and through this documentary we’ve shadowed her as she traveled to India after almost 35 years. This is not an investigative piece, just an observation of a person who has had a questionable past and has always lived life on her own terms. Searching for Sheela is a documentary that tries to get a closer look at one of the most sensationalized personalities in India”.
