Bollywood films are going through a phase where remixing and rehashing of old songs is taking center stage. From, ‘Mungda‘, ‘Poster Lagwa Do’, ‘Aankh Marey’ to ‘Yeh Paisa’, numerous old melodies have been recreated. This trend has certainly not gone down well with many experts and thinkers of Indian cinema.

Now, singer Shaan has also hit out at the practice of remixing old classics. Shaan, in an interview with The Indian Express said, “Think music companies are up to something and there is something more to it. They are changing the copyrights of the original songs and giving credit to those who have not composed the song. But, clearly, they can’t be so obsessed with recreations especially when people are not liking them. Why are they still doing it?”

Sonakshi Sinha’s ‘Mungda’ song from ‘Total Dhamaal’ has created a lot of furore. ‘Total Dhamaal’ features an ensemble cast and is releasing this Friday.

Shaan also wanted to know about how music labels are benefiting from this practice.

Bollywood filmmakers have to understand that by reusing old classics, they’re not creating any original content and fresh ideas. Hopefully, producers and writers are listening to Shaan’s wise words.
