Marriages are beautiful, but sometimes they don’t last forever. However, the marriage of veteran actress Shabana Azmi and lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar doesn’t fall in this category. The duo tied the knot on December 9, 1984, and will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this year. In a recent chat, the ‘Ankur’ actress revealed what her husband feels is the secret to their marriage working.

During a chat with Times of India, Shabana Azmi revealed the secret behind her successful marriage to Javed Akhtar. The veteran actress told the publication, “He (Akhtar) says the success of our marriage is that we don’t meet too often, we are both busy running in different directions.” She continued, “We come from similar backgrounds – our fathers were poets from UP and communists, we have a common view on things – so people say considering these factors we should have had an arranged marriage.”

Further speaking about their marriage, the ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ added, “Touchwood we have a happy and strong relationship. He (Javed) says ‘Shabana is my best friend and even marriage could not change that’.”

Before marrying Shabana Azmi in December 1984, Javed Akhtar was married to screenwriter Honey Irani. Javed and Honey share two children – filmmaker Zoya Akhtar and actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar.
