Shabana Azmi on recovering from near-fatal car accident: It’s a miracle I survived

In January this year, Shabana Azmi had met with a horrific car accident. The veteran actress’ car had rammed into a truck on the Mumbai-Pune-Expressway. Fortunately, she was taken to a hospital on time. And now the National award-winning actress has recuperated after the shocking accident.

The ‘Arth’ actress in a recent interview opened up about her recovery post the near-fatal accident and resuming work all over again.

Revealing how it’s a miracle that she survived without breaking any bones, Shabana told Mumbai Mirror, “I have recovered 90 per cent, but there is still some pain in my arms and palms because of the whiplash on my neck. Doctors tell me it will take another couple of months to heal. It’s a miracle I survived without breaking any bones. I’ve broken my shoulder, wrist and foot in the past.”

Sharing how her husband, Javed Akhtar, had reacted on seeing her covered in blood, the actress said, “Javed says when he saw me covered in blood, he had his heart in his mouth till I reached the ICU. Mercifully, I remember nothing, but I’m grateful for all the prayers and blessings I received from all over the world, which had a big hand in my recovery.”

Amidst the pandemic, the actress has kept herself busy by reading and writing. She has even collaborated with Tony award-winning director Michael Mayer, Italian author Erri De Luca and his partner Paola Bisson for an innovative project, Decameron 2020. The initiative is a collection of dramatised recitations of stories on the Coronavirus crisis written by authors from across the globe.
