Veteran actress Shabana Azmi shined on the big screen as she returns with the Karan Johar directorial Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The actress plays the role of Alia Bhatt’s grandmother. The movie also stars Ranveer Singh as one of the main leads. Recently, the actress opened up about the reason why she almost considered giving up acting and left the sets crying.
Shabana Azmi reveals why she wanted to quit acting
Recalling the incident, Shabana Azmi shared that this all happened on the sets of her 1977 film, Parvarish. She candidly acknowledges her lack of dancing skills, humorously referring to herself as having two left feet. She was unable to dance to save her life. In an attempt to overcome her apprehensions, she approached the seasoned choreographer, Kamal Master, and humbly requested rehearsals. However, to her surprise, the self-assured choreographer reassured her that rehearsals were unnecessary. Instead, all she had to do was simply clap. Reflecting on that moment, Shabana Azmi admits with a mix of humour and fear, “It was so frightening because I was with Neetu Singh. Even before I could figure out where I have to put my right foot, and left foot, Neetu would have done two rehearsals and sat over there.”
The movie Parvarish also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Neetu Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna, among others.
Shabana Azmi recalls the embarrassment she faced on the sets
Recollecting her feelings of nervousness during the shoot, she shared a poignant memory, “I told Kamal Ji it was very complicated and can we change it a little bit. There were a lot of junior artists on the sets. He said ‘Okay, lights off. Now Shabana Ji is now going to teach Kamal dance master what steps to do’. It was so humiliating and bad that I just ran off the set. I was in these ghastly clothes. I went (out) to find my car was not there. In those clothes I started walking barefoot to my house in Juhu, crying away and saying ‘I am not going to work in any film anymore. I just don’t want this humiliation.”
Shabana Azmi went on to share that, later on, Manmohan Desai, the director of Parvarish, approached and embraced the actress, expressing his apologies. Additionally, several other producers offered their support, helping her to regain composure. During this comforting moment, Sulakshana Pandit, another individual involved in the film, assured the actress that she held a crucial role as the leading lady, making her feel uplifted by her kind words.
Can you imagine Shabana Azmi quitting acting? We would have not been able to witness this talent.
