Veteran actress Shabana Azmi slammed religious fundamentalists when her recent remarks were labelled as ‘anti-national’ by them. The actress was even trolled for the comments that she made while receiving an award for her work for women empowerment in Indore.
As per a report by PTI, Shabana said that one should not be afraid of criticising their government because if one doesn’t point out the flaws, how can anyone expect the conditions to improve. She had further added, “But the atmosphere (in the country) now is such that if you criticise, especially the government, you are immediately branded as anti-national. We should not be afraid of this. Nobody needs their certificate.”

Hitting back at the trollers, the ‘Fire’ actress also wrote on Twitter, “I’d like to remind people that my father Kaifi Azmi returned his Padma Shri when Congress was at the centre in protest against a UP minister who had said that those asking for Urdu to get second language status should be paraded on a donkey with their faces blackened.”
Coming in support of Azmi, actress Swara Bhasker too lashed out at people for targeting the veteran actress with fake allegations. Swara shared the following post:
It is shameful how an artist of the profile & calibre of @AzmiShabana ma’am is being relentlessly targeted with fake allegations by people who have not contributed 1/100th of what she has to modern Indian popular culture and discourse. More power to you ma’am! ♥️♥️♥️ https://t.co/0P1onV1NcS
