Former Indian Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, passed away at the age of 93 yesterday at AIIMS hospital in Delhi. Atalji, who has been the PM of India thrice, was admitted 9 weeks back, however, his health started deteriorating over the two days.
Mourning the loss of the man known for his oratory skills, AIIMS released a press statement, which read, “It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 5.05 p.m. on 16.08.2018. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support system. Despite the best of efforts, we have lost him today.”
Post his unfortunate demise, many Bollywood celebrities and political leaders across the country offered their condolences. Shah Rukh Khan also took to Twitter and penned an emotional note. Saying he has “lost a part of his childhood with Atalji’s demise”, Khan wrote,“My father used to take me for every speech that Mr Vajpayee made in Delhi when I was growing up. Years on, I had the opportunity to meet him and spend lots of time discussing poetry, films, politics and our ailing knees. I also had the privilege of enacting one of his poems for the screen. He was fondly addressed as ‘Baapji’ at home. Today the country has lost a Father Figure and a great leader. Personally, I have lost a part of my childhood and growing up memories of learning to smile and of course poetry. I consider myself the luckiest to have had his influence on my life during my formative years. May his soul rest in peace. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Will miss your smiling face Baapji.”
