‘Shah Rukh Khan said we are both growing old,’ Rajkumar Hirani reveals the HILARIOUS way Dunki came together

Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani, both are stars of their professions and several times rumours of their collaboration have come. However, they never materialised until last year, when Shah Rukh Khan announced he is doing Rajkumar Hirani directed Dunki.

Rajkumar Hirani reveals the origin of Dunki

While it is one of the most awaited collaboration, how it came to happen is actually a little funny. In an interview with India Today, Hirani revealed, “Usually, in most films, the casting is done after you have written the script. But somewhere during the making of Sanju (2018), Shah Rukh said, ‘We are both growing old, bahut ho gaya (enough is enough); we have to do a film together’. There has been a mutual admiration for long.“

Hirani on his work experience with SRK

While talking about his experience of working with Shah Rukh, Hirani said, “Working with him has been such joy that it’s hard to describe. He brings positive energy on the set and always makes everybody happy around him. I had no idea he prepares so much; I thought of him as an impromptu actor. When an actor is already prepared, it makes your job easier. Dunki is a very high-performance film with a lot of monologues and long scenes, but he has got the entire script in his head, word to word. He even remembers everybody else’s lines.“

Hirani on SRK’s process

The director is also in awe of his star’s creative process. Discussing that, he said, “He shoots videos of a scene at his home and sends them to me. There will be 15 ways of how he is going to do this. Before I go on the set, I know what he is going to do. Sometimes I have kept two days for a shoot and he finishes it in two hours.” Hirani revealed that the Badshah even joked on converting him according to his sleeping schedule. “He keeps teasing me that by the time the shoot is done, he will have converted me. I wish I had worked earlier with him,” he said.

Shah Rukh and Hirani’s Dunki is eyeing a release date of December 22, 2023. The film also features Taapsee Pannu. SRK and his director had earlier been rumoured to have been in talks for Munnabhai series and other projects too. Finally they are working on Dunki and it surely is going to be the film to look out for.
