Actor Shekhar Suman is not so happy with vulgar and distasteful content in comedy and web shows. In a conversation with us, Suman opened up saying, “Not anybody who just picks up a mic and calls themselves stand-up comic has the skill and 99% of them are really pathetic. They don’t know what they are talking about. They feel that ‘if I have the independence to be on social media, I should begin my show by abusing everybody or using abusive words’. It doesn’t function like that. Independence doesn’t mean you start becoming abusive.”
Talking about the content of web series, he said, “Similarly in web series, it’s same. Web series means you explore near kinds of content which otherwise would have been a part of commercial cinema. Independence doesn’t mean it’s all about homosexual, threesome, sex, abuses. It’s not. That’s why we tend to misuse our independence. As there is no censorship, there are all kinds of crap stuff that is coming. I can’t watch it with my family because beyond a point these abuses start hurting my ears because they are absolutely pointless.”
He further said, “There is a 100 years of cinema that survived without abuses and this kind of sexuality. I can understand here and there sporadically if you have shown a bit of sex as it is an integral part of the script but why compulsory sexual angle and abuses in everything? There are lots of dirt in society that doesn’t mean you show everything.”
Shekhar is planning to bring back his most popular chat show ‘Movers & Shakers’.
