Renowned playback singer Jagjit Kaur, the widow of the late music composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam passed away today morning. She was 93 years old and her last rites were performed at the Juhu Crematorium with a few people, considering Covid-19 restrictions. She breathed her last around 6 am at her residence in Mumbai. She was best known for her songs like Dekh Lo Aaj Humko from Bazaar and Pehle To Aankh Milana from the film Shola Aur Shabnam. The late singer started her musical career in the ’50s and crooned for movies like Posti and Dil-e-Nadan. For the unversed, Kaur got married to Khayyam in 1954. She is also known for her songs in Umrao Jaan in 1981 which were composed by Khayyam.
Her husband, Khayyam was a National Award Winner music director. He passed on August 19, 2019, after suffering from a heart attack. He was 92 and was also apparently suffering from a lung ailment and died at Sujay Hospital in Juhu. The couple had a son Pradeep Khayyam, who unfortunately died in 2012 after a cardiac arrest.
The legendary music composer was renowned for his melodies in films such as Kabhi Kabhie and Umrao Jaan. Many do not know that in 2016, Kaur and her husband-composer, started the Khayyam Jagjit Kaur KPG Charitable Trust to support new and budding artists and technicians in India.
Many fans are taking to Twitter to mourn her death. One of the fans wrote, “So sad to know that #JagjitKaur ji is no more. A wonderful singer in her own right. Widow of the legendary music director #Khayyam Her best song: Tum Apna Ranj o Gham Apni Pareshani Mujhe De Doh.” Another one wrote, “Om Shanti, The beautiful haunting voice behind “Dekh lo aaj humain” from Bazaar, Khayyam Saab’s composition…lyrics guess by Mirza Shauq…#JagjitKaur.”
