Recently, Irrfan Khan’s son Babil wrote a very thoughtful post where he mentioned how Indian cinema is looked outside India, how his father was defeated in the box-office by the ‘hunks with six-pack abs’ defying laws of physics and reality, photoshopped item songs and conventional representations of patriarchy’. Celebs like Richa Chadha, Sudhir Mishra, Shekhar Kapur, Nandita Das, Onir and others also expressed their views on this.
Singer Sona Mohapatra replied back to Onir’s tweet slamming the OTT platforms. Onir’s tweet read, “That is the story of the indie films … be it the artists or the craftsmen. A combination of changing audience taste and an industry that wants change can help the industry evolve.” Sona commented, “And just when we thought that there was a ray of hope with the OTT platforms coming in, no immediate Friday BO pressures and a chance to back worthy talent and narratives..but then same TV execs hired, bowing to the same 6/7 families of #Bollywood and voila, Mrs. Serial Nonsense.”

The excerpt from Babil’s post read, “My father gave his life trying to elevate the art of acting in the adverse conditions of noughties Bollywood and alas, for almost all of his journey, was defeated in the box office by hunks with six pack abs delivering theatrical one-liners and defying the laws of physics and reality, photoshopped item songs, just blatant sexism and same-old conventional representations of patriarchy (and you must understand, to be defeated at the box office means that majority of the investment in Bollywood would be going to the winners, engulfing us in a vicious circle).”
