In 2016, Sonam Kapoor was named PETA India’s Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity, and in 2017, Sonam Kapoor and her sister Rhea Kapoor’s clothing and accessories brand Rheson won PETA’s Compassionate Business Award for their cruelty-free handbags. This year, Sonam has been named PETA India’s Person of the Year for 2018.
Sonam has been honoured as she supports eating vegan diets. She also keeps animal skins out of her handbag line for her fashion brand Rheson, apart from taking other action for the welfare of animals.
PETA India Associate Director Sachin Bangera said in a statement, “Whether she’s enjoying vibrant vegan meals or rallying her fans to do their part to stop animal suffering, Sonam Kapoor never hesitates to help animals any way she can.”
He further said, “We encourage everyone to take a page out of her book and live with compassion and respect for all beings.”
Sonam has always stood for animals and she has gone out of her way for their well being. In 2015, she wrote a letter to the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, urging him not to revoke the ban on classroom dissection for university life-science and zoology students. Also, in 2010, she sent a letter on behalf of PETA to the former Home Minister of Maharashtra, RR Patil, urging him to ban glass-coated manja (kites) that caused injuries to birds in the state.
