Suchitra Krishnamoorthi speaks up on ex-husband Shekhar Kapur’s infidelity, shares if she has forgiven Preity Zinta

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi is best remembered as the actress from Shah Rukh Khan starrer Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. The actress was a promising talent in the Indian film industry, but she did very limited work. Suchitra Krishnamoorthi was married to filmmaker Shekhar Kapur but the two had a messy divorce. Now, after 15 years of their divorce, the actress has opened up on the issue.

Suchitra informed that she got married to the filmmaker against her parents’ wish. In an interview with Siddharth Kanan, the actress shared, “My parents were against this marriage as Shekhar was my mother’s age at that time and he was divorced and from the film industry. My mother sat at my feet and begged me not to go forward with this marriage.”

Talking about their marriage, she said, “I feel that my marriage to Shekhar was karma that I had to fulfil. Because when I met him I got obsessed. When I was a 10-12-year-old kid, I used to think that I would either marry ex-Pak cricketer and PM Imran Khan or Shekhar Kapur. I went to meet him when he was casting for a film called, Champion. However, the film didn’t see the light of day. Then I kept meeting him and one thing led to another.”

On their divorce…

Suchitra shared that Shekhar came from a mindset that he ‘never wanted his wife to act’. It was also the reason that she started thinking of getting a divorce in their first year of marriage, but then she got pregnant. She informed, “Actually, when I got pregnant, I was leaving the marriage. I was moving to the Berklee College of Music. But I discovered I was pregnant. So fate has its own way of unravelling itself and unravelling your life story.”

The actress also said that the filmmaker even cheated on her. And when asked if that was the final nail in the coffin for their divorce, she said, “I don’t think marriages break because of infidelity, they break up because of disrespect.” The couple got married in the late 90s and got divorced in 2007. They co-parent their daughter Kaveri Kapur now.

Suchitra on Preity Zinta

While her marriage with Shekhar was breaking, Suchitra also got in a war of words with Preity. She had apparently blamed Preity for getting in between her marriage. The Kal Ho Naa Ho actress had hit back at Suchitra, comparing her being an actress and Suchitra being a homemaker while asking her to see a ‘psychiatrist’.

Suchitra has now replied to it saying that Preity is free to give her opinion and she is proud to be a homemaker. When asked if she has forgiven Preity, Suchitra said that she is indifferent towards her. She insisted, “I don’t need to (forgive her). She is not a part of my consciousness at all. All these things do not exist for me, which is a good space to be in.”

Last year, Suchitra appeared in two projects, a film titled Odd Couple and the web series Guilty Minds. She is also focusing on her music career now.
