Film producer Sorav Gupta of Sundawn Entertainment Pvt Ltd has accused actor-MP Sunny Deol of cheating, extortion, and forgery. In a press conference earlier this week, Gupta, a real estate developer turned producer, alleged that Sunny Deol accepted money in advance for a film in 2016, continued to take more funds with promises of starting the project, but ultimately never proceeded with the film, especially after the success of Gadar 2.

Sunny Deol accused of cheating and forgery by film producers

Gupta shared with HT City that in 2016, he signed Sunny Deol as the lead for his film for a fee of ₹4 crore. “We gave him ₹1 crore in advance, but instead of starting my film, he chose to shoot for Poster Boys (2017). He kept asking for more money, and now ₹2.55 crore is in Sunny ji’s account. He also made me pay another director, book Filmistaan studio, and hire an executive producer,” Gupta explained.

Additionally, Gupta accused Deol of forging an agreement with his company in 2023. “When we read the agreement, humne dekha ki unhonein toh panna hi change kar diya beech wala, jahan par fees ka amount ₹4 crore ko badha kar ₹8 crore kar diya aur profit to ₹2 crore kar diya,” he revealed.

Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, known for films such as Janwar (1999) and Andaaz (2003), supported Gupta during the press conference, claiming he faced similar issues with Sunny Deol. “Sunny Deol acquired rights from my movie Ajay (1996) for overseas distribution and only made a partial payment. The balance payment never came through,” Darshan said. He added, “Later, Sunny requested me to work on a project with him, saying, ‘Have faith in me, help me out,’ and got me to pay him again.”

An anonymous industry source stated that Deol has a reputation for dishonouring commitments with several producers. “He is a known troublemaker for years. Sunny gave a bound script of a film called Ram Janmbhumi to a producer who created a huge set in Mumbai. Sunny signed the film for ₹5 crore but later refused to come to the sets and demanded a fee of ₹25 crore after the success of Gadar 2.”

Gupta has filed a police complaint against Deol. “The police issued [Deol] a notice on April 30. His office sent a letter saying he was out of town on the day he was to present himself,” Gupta noted.
