Surekha Sikri’s Badhaai Ho and Zubeidaa costar Neena Gupta & Karisma Kapoor offer heartfelt tribute

On Friday, Hindi cinema lost one of its most versatile artiste, Surekha Sikri. The 75-year-old veteran actress breathed her last on July 16 following a massive heart attack. The demise of the National award-winning actress has left the entire nation mourning. Neena Gupta and Karisma Kapoor, who have had the honour of working with Sikri in Badhaai Ho and Zubeidaa, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late actress.

Taking to her Instagram handle, Neena Gupta shared a video. Recalling her experience of working with Surekha Sikri, Neena shared, “Sharing sorrow reduces suffering. Today, in the morning I received the unfortunate news of actor Surekha Sikri’s demise and I decided to share my sorrow with you. My memory of her goes back to my National School of Drama days, wherein Surekha Sikri was a part of the Repertory Company. Whenever I would see her act, I wanted to become more like her.”

She went on to add, “When we starred together in Badhaai Ho and I got an opportunity to learn a lot from her. There are many things that I still wished to learn from her. What a commitment she had towards her craft. In Badhaai Ho I remember we were shooting a scene where she had to scold my in-laws in the film. As a co-actor, I requested her to give me cues and she gave them to me with full gusto during all the takes that it took for that scene. I feel so sad that she is no more. It’s very sad.”

For the unversed, Surekha had played Neena’s mother-in-law in Badhaai Ho. Their camaraderie was one of the highlights of the film. Karisma Kapoor who had the pleasure of working with the veteran actress in Zubeidaa is heartbroken. Sharing a BTS still from the critically acclaimed film, Karisma wrote, “It was a wonderful journey to have you play my mother in Zubeidaa. So honoured to have gotten a chance to work with such a talented actor. Rest in peace Surekha ji.”

Surekha was not keeping well, since the last few years. She had also suffered a brain stroke recently.
