Swara Bhasker asks Sunrisers Hyderabad’s players to officially apologize to Daren Sammy for their racist remarks

Actress Swara Bhasker is known for voicing out her opinions fearlessly and without any inhibitions. Recently, the actress took to her social media handle to share her opinion when former West Indies cricketer Daren Sammy revealed on Friday that he was subjected to racism when he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

After the heartbreaking incident of George Floyd’s death in the USA, movement like ‘Black Lives Matter’ has awakened the world and many celebrities have come ahead to speak about racism and create awareness.

Former West Indies cricketer Daren Sammy took to his social media handle to reveal the racism that he has faced when he was playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He even said that he would expose the names of the Indian players who made those racist remarks.

Swara took to her Twitter handle and asked Sammy’s former teammates to apologise to him. She wrote, “Dear @darensammy88
if someone used the N word at a black person & said they “operated from a place of love” what would u say? Same with word ‘Kaalu’ & it’s variations. And team members of @SunRisers. Show some decency & spine #SaySorryToDaren officially! #thatsnotcricket @IPL (sic).”

But, Daren replied to the actress’ tweet saying that that he is condoning the acts of racism that were done to him, but his bigger motive is to educate people about it. In his reply, the cricketer wrote, “Don’t get me wrong I’m not condoning what was done/said. I’m saying let’s use this opportunity to educate each other so it doesn’t happen again. One can only apologize if he/she feels wrong about something. I’m confident&proud to be black. That will never change.”

To which Swara agreed and praised him for his generosity. “Totally agree Daren! Shows generosity & grace on your part. ?????? But it’s important that your teammates own up to their action, even if they didn’t mean it- or didn’t realise- they still played a racist exchange. As you say education- realisation & owning up to one’s actions (sic),” she tweeted.

After the death of George Floyd in America, a movement called ‘Black Lives Matter’ created waves on social media and masses in the USA have come out on the streets to protest against racism. Thanks to which a lot of other cases related to racism have come forward and one of them was Daren Sammy being called ‘Kalu’ by his own teammates when he used to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
