Yash Chopra‘s films are known for their tapestry of snow covered hills and lush valleys where the hero and the heroine weaved their dreams. Yashji was so impressed by the vibrant beauty of the Swiss countryside, that he soon started shooting most of his films in the scenic valley. He made the sleepy countryside the most coveted destination for Bollywood shoots.
The filmmaker’s films shot in the beautiful Swiss Alps influenced not only the filmmakers but also the fans. They soon started flocking to the Swiss Alps thus contributing to the economy. Yash Chopra’s contribution was duly noted by the Swiss Government and they decided to honour the late filmmaker by installing a bronze sculpture at the heart of Interlaken – a prime spot as it is most visited by the tourists.
The bronze statue that weighed around 250 kg was unveiled by his wife Pam Chopra and daughter-in-law Rani Mukerji. The event that was organised by the Interlaken Tourism and Jungfrau Railways also had in attendance ministers and senior bureaucrats from the Swiss government.
The filmmaker has been earlier awarded by the Swiss Government for promoting their country through his films. They had honoured him with honorary title of Ambassador of Interlaken in 2011. There is also a train named after him and a suite in a very famous five star hotel.
