Music composer Anurag Saikia has got rave reviews for his music in Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Thappad’. This is Anurag’s third collaboration with the filmmaker after ‘Mulk’ and Article 15′. Where original music seems to have petered out, the National Award-winning music composer believes in serving something new and fresh to the audience.
When we asked Anurag about his views on remaking or recreating old songs, he said, “Remix is not a new thing. It has been happening for years. The difference is that earlier there were mostly singles and now it is used in films. There are also lots of original music happening in Bollywood and ‘Kabir Singh’s album is the best example. It is the call of the director what he really wants. Sometimes, creating a remake shouldn’t bother you if the film demands.”
“Recreation is not an easy task. I don’t know if I am going to recreate something in the future or not, because I have other things to showcase and give to the world. After that, if a film demands, I am ready for that. But my main priority will always be creating an original composition because that’s me actually,” added Anurag.

While talking about his working experience with Anubhav Sinha, Anurag said, “He is very musical. All his films from ‘Tum Bin’ to ‘Ra. One’, the songs are superb. It becomes very easy for a composer to work with a director like him who knows what he wants. He is very much concerned with the lyrics of the songs.”
Anurag has taken the first-ever initiative of its kind and scale of syncing Borgeets (lyrical songs composed in 15th-16th centuries by poet-saint Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhabdeva) and recording them with the flamboyant ’85 Piece Orchestra’ at FAMES’s Project – Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra to ravishing artists of ‘Shillong Choral’.
