Last night’s IPL game at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians saw the former emerge victorious by 24 runs. The last time KKR defeated MI on its home ground was in May 2012. However, that match is remembered for more than just SRK’s team winning. It was the same match that saw Shah Rukh Khan being banned for five years from MCA premises after an ugly spat with Mumbai Cricket Association security staff.
While the ban was lifted three years later (in 2015), last night’s game between the teams in the east and west of India refreshed fans’ memories. A former KKR staff member posted about it on social media and later revealed the truth about the Shah Rukh Khan Wankhede Stadium incident.
KKR’s former director reveals the truth
Ahead of Friday’s Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders match, Joy Bhattacharjya – the former KKR director, took to social media and revealed what really happened at the Wankhede Stadium in 2012. Reminiscing about the KKR beating MI at the stadium in Mumbai, Bhattacharjya took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “The last time KKR beat MI at the Wankhede, I was still a part of that dugout. It’s been a while, but today might just be the day!”
Replying to a non-deleted “No, Joy! KKR has been cursed from the day SRK abused the Wankhede security guard” remark, the former KKR staff member revealed Suhana – who was with Shah Rukh at the time of the incident, was catcalled. He tweeted, “KKR won two championships after that incident. And he did not abuse, I was there. And the next time, stay calm when someone cat calls your young daughter. (sic)”
Following Kolkata Knight Riders defeating Mumbai Indians by 24 runs at last night’s match, Bhattacharjya quoted his original tweet and wrote, “This tweet aged well. In just 11 hours I admit, but it still aged well.”
Shah Rukh Khan 2012 Wankhede Stadium incident
The May 2012 game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians saw KKR defend 140 runs thanks to Sunil Narine’s 4/15. However, after the match, Shah Rukh Khan was involved in an ugly spat with the Mumbai Cricket Association security staff. MCA, which administers the stadium, alleged SRK tried to force his way to the grounds after the match and abused and manhandled guards when he was stopped. The MCA managing committee, headed by the former Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh, decided to ban the superstar for five years.
During an old interview on Aap Ki Adalat, Shah Rukh Khan recalled the incident saying, “Yes I was very angry and upset. My kids were there and I thought someone… Maybe they had a rule, that hatao yaha se. I told him, these are our kids and we are taking them. I just said this. There was a person there who said a word that I, as a Delhi person, felt like it was an abusive word. Even though the same word in Marathi is also rude. Thoda sa religious, galat tha woh (It was religious, it was wrong). I then lost my cool, main pagal hogaya and I went to hit him.”
