Legendary Indian classical musician and Padma Vibhushan awardee Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan passed away on January 17, 2021. He was 89. According to PTI report, the musician breathed his last at his Mumbai residence. Khan’s death came as a huge shock to his family as he was keeping well.

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar and music maestro AR Rahman paid a heartfelt tribute to the late musician via their social media handles.

Speaking about the musician’s death, his daughter-in-law, Namrata Gupta Khan told PTI, “Today morning he was fine. We had a 24-hour nurse at home. During his massage he vomited and I ran immediately his eyes were shut and he was breathing slowly. I tried connecting to doctors and when they came he had already died.” 

Mourning the legendary musician’s demise, AR Rahman tweeted, The sweetest teacher of all ..May the Ghafoor-ur-Rahim give you a special place in the next world #UstadGhulamMustafa (sic).”

 

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar remembering the departed soul shared, “Mujhe abhi abhi ye dukhad khabar mili hai ki mahan shastriya gayak Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Saheb is duniya mein nahi rahe. Ye sunke mujhe bahut dukh hua. Wo gayak to acche the hee par insaaan bhi bahut acche the.”

Paying tribute to Khan, Lata further shared that she had learnt music from him and his death is a huge loss for the music industry. “Meri bhanji ne bhi Khan sahab se sangeet sikha hai, maine bhi unse thoda sangeet sikha tha. Unke jaane se sangeet ki bahut haani hui hai. Main unko vinamra shraddhanjali arpan karti hun,” she tweeted.

Khan was awarded the Padma Shri (1991), Padma Bhushan (2006) and Padma Vibhushan (2018). He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award(2003), the highest Indian recognition given to practising artistes by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama.

The late musician has even lent his voice to Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome (1969). He also gave playbacks for films like Umrao Jaan, Badnaam Basti and Shreemaan Aashique to name a few. He has even composed music for Aagaman (1982).

Khan has even mentored talents like Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Kamal Barot, Waheeda Rehman, Ranu Mukherjee, Geeta Dutt, A. R. Rahman, Hariharan, Shaan and Sonu Nigam, Sanah Moidutty, Sagarika, Alisha Chinoy, Shilpa Rao to name a few.
