Veteran theatre and film personality Tom Alter lost his battle against cancer on Friday night at his residence, informs his manager. He was 67.

He was suffering from stage four skin cancer and was being treated at a hospital in Mumbai where he was admitted in September. On Thursday night, he returned home and breathed his last on Friday, his manager Ismail Ansari told a news agency.

Earlier, his son Jamie had revealed that his father was suffering from squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. Last year, the actor had got his thumb amputated due to the condition. Jamie had said that Tom Alter was showing signs of improvement.

The actor of American-Indian origin was settled in India. He played pivotal roles in movies like ‘Gandhi’, ‘Shatranj Ke Khilari’, ‘Kranti’, ‘Aashiqui’ and ‘Parinda’. In the year 2008, he was conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour of India.
