Veteran actress Shashikala Om Prakash Saigal (née Jawalkar) passed away on Sunday. The 88-year-old actress breathed her last in her Mumbai residence. Shashikala has worked in several Hindi films as well as television shows. The news of Shashikala’s death was shared on Facebook by writer Kiran Kotrial.
Sharing two major throwback pictures of the late actress, Kiran took to Facebook and wrote, “Rest in peace Shashikala.’ Details about the actress’ death are yet to be known.
Born in Maharashtra, Shashikala started acting at the tender age of 5. She mostly did supporting roles and has appeared in over a hundred Hindi films. The veteran actress has films like Sujata, Aarti, Anupama, Phool Aur Patthar, Ayi Milan Ki Bela, Gumrah, Waqt, Khubsoorat Pardesi Babu, Baadshah, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Chori Chori to her credit.
She also featured in several hit television shows like Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, Son Pari and few others. Shashikala was married to Om Prakash Saigal. The couple has two daughters.

In the year 2007, Shashikala was honoured with the Padma Shri award (the fourth highest civilian award) for her contribution to Indian Cinema. While receiving the award she had said, “I have been recognized for this award very late, and indeed, I should have got this award long back.” In 2009, she was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the V. Shantaram Awards.
