Vicky Kaushal starrer Sardar Udham trailer just dropped and the fans are left intrigued. The movie is based on the life of Sardar Udham Singh who was one of the freedom fighters of the country. He was the revolutionary who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, on 13 March 1940, in London after the Jallianwala Bagh incident. During the trailer launch today, Udham Singh director Shoojit Sircar opened up about the Jallianwala Bagh being just another historical spot and its beautification.
Shoojit said, “I can only tell you that Sardar Udham was a really personal journey for me. So as you said when I visited Jallianwala Bagh, I just went there and- I am talking about 1999, but since then I have been visiting quite often, It’s not just that I visited in 1999. Amritsar has been one of my favourite places, I have done theatre there, I have done street theatre there, travelled from Delhi. It’s really close for me. So Jallianwala Bagh as an incident, I think the most important factor for me was what you saw in the trailer or about Sardar Udham- that he said about that particular incident. We should not forget it and the world should not forget it.”
He further added, “What you are asking about the beautician, I think that is not in my hands. In my hand is my expression that is my cinema and I create that through my films, but I think it is their decision of the authorities, whatever they feel right to keep it alive I think it is purely their decision. I won’t come in the way of what they want to do with the Jallianwala Bagh. But Jallianwala Bagh will always be a place where I will take my children, I will take my grandchildren, everyone. Jallianwala Bagh should be a big chapter in our books. What Vicky said is very right there is a very small chapter, 1 page, but I think there should be many many pages on Jallianwala Bagh incidence and what happened to post that, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheer Udham Singh.”
