Vidya Balan, who is now promoting her upcoming flick ‘Tumhari Sulu’, was recently discussing the popular perceptions pertaining to s*x in India. Resonating what liberal, progressive individuals and social scientists have been discussing for quite some time now, Vidya says s*x is yet interpreted as only a means of reproduction and nothing else.
“It feels funny how in spite of being the most populated country in the world, we still don’t talk about s*x openly. The idea of s*x is looked down by people because Indian culture wants us to be sexual only in the institution of marriage, for purposes of procreation. But the whole feeling, the joy of intimacy, pleasure and fun is missing,” she said. (Also Read: Vidya Balan’s goofiness makes this new poster of ‘Tumhari Sulu’ endearing!)
Vidya, in the film, plays a housewife who turns an RJ later. Throughout her career, she has gone on to work in films that are backed with strong content and the female characters are often ornamented with strong attributes.
“We must strive for a traditional and yet modern balance, and (aim) for the hypocrisy related to sex to go away. Our children need to know that sex is a feeling, not a taboo,” she added.
Here’s hoping that happens soon!
