Taapsee Pannu starrer ‘Thappad’ got rave reviews from critics as well as audiences. Apart from Taapsee, the second lead of the movie Pavail Gulati (Taapsee’s on-screen husband) was also lauded for his superb performance. Vidya Balan was also all praise for Pavail and she called him to give her feedback on his character.
In an interview with Mid-day, Pavail said, “I had goosebumps while talking to her. She said, ‘I hate you, and I hate myself for liking you in the end’.”
In ‘Thappad’, Pavail doesn’t play a villainous character or a ‘bad’ husband but his character was layered. Anubhav Sinha and Mrunmayee Lagoo’s writing was so strong that they didn’t want to show Pavail in a bad light. Towards the end of the film, you might sympathise with him.
Here’s Bollywood Bubble’s interview with Pavail Gulati:
While talking about his character, Pavail said, “Vikram was a layered character. Sir (director Anubhav Sinha) wanted him to [come across] as a nice guy so that he could be related to. We wanted people to hate him, but also sympathise with him.”

Despite being a social drama, the movie did a decent business at the box office. Recently, a website shared the box-office collection with the headline “Audience gives TIGHT SLAP To #Thappad.” This didn’t go well with director Anubhav Sinha and he slammed the portal. He later apologised for the same.
