Dhvani Bhanushli’s Vaaste’ is one of the biggest hit songs on the internet. Her chemistry with Siddharth Gupta was widely applauded online. The music video has reached 1 billion views and they are only increasing. The credit goes to the incredible director duo Radhika Rao & Vinay Sapru.
In a conversation with us, Vinay opened up about ‘Vaaste’s success, he recalled the journey of making the show, “You know with Vaaste, we had stopped directing music videos for some time. We were busy with films and all and then we told Bhushan Ji, that we directed Lata Mangeshkar, Aasha Bhosle, Pankaj Udas and Phalguni Pathak and when we thing gazals, its Pankaj Udas ji, Dandiya- Palguni Pathak. So I told Bhushan Ji that we have come to 1 Billion people cant we create more bhajan, gazal or pop icon singers.”
He continued, “So we had gone to judge an award function and we saw Dhvani playing there as a youngster and she was shivering with the angst of a newcomer. We had not directed a pop song for a long time and we said let’s direct this girl. ‘Vaaste’ was more satisfying you know why, because we had no money and we didn’t have anyone backing us up. We raided Radhik’s wardrobe. So the jumper Dhvani is wearing is Radhika’s, the skirt she is wearing is also Radhika’s. The other girl who is wearing the shirt with ‘I love disco’ is Radhika’s. For boys, we raided my wardrobe. We decided that we will take this one Xaviers college and shoot the whole song around it. We had this bunch of newcomers and Radhika and I were with a vision of doing something in the pop industry. Then Bhushan Ji said that in T series, out of all the combined songs, ‘Vaaste’ had the most views and there couldn’t be any more satisfying reward.”

Talking about the success Vinay said, “This will do good for the new pop singers and for the country that has so much potential.”
When Vaaste came out, the song was blowing up on the internet and is still of the favourites. But there were netizens who were drawing parallels between Siddharth Gupta’s entry and that of Thomas Hayes’s character William Magnusson in the Norwegian series ‘SKAM’. Some even went on to the extent of saying that the sequence is copied. But, clearing the sir, Vinay said, “It was not an inspiration at all. It was pretty coincidental that it happened. Otherwise Radhika and I; our visuals are absolutely original. We have done 150 songs still today and not even a single one is similar. Whether Divya Khosla Kumar is adding vodka in maggie or that choti step. There is no parallels, it’s just one of those coincidences.”
