Vivek Oberoi recently shared a nostalgic account of his childhood experience of selling perfumes door-to-door. The 10-year-old Vivek was tasked by his father, Suresh Oberoi, to learn the ropes of business by selling perfumes and recording the inventory in a diary. The venture allowed him to gain valuable experience in business, accounting, and sales at a young age.

Talking about his entrepreneurial journey, he said, “I was about 10 years old when my father approached me, saying we’d go on a holiday in a month, but before that, he would teach me something over the first four weeks.  He asked me to keep a diary and track the inventory of perfumes he had purchased for me. He told me that whatever I managed to sell beyond the marked price would be mine.”

He credited his father, Suresh Oberoi, for shaping his business approach in his childhood. He shares, “I went door to door on my bicycle, carrying my school bag filled with the inventory and merchandise. I made mistakes but learned a lot. I kept at it every year. By the time I was 15, I started developing my own ideas and ventured into the stock market. I began pursuing small entrepreneurial projects.”

The experience of building and selling his own company opened his eyes to the potential of creating a business, selling it to a multinational corporation, and generating profits for both himself and his investors. He credits this entrepreneurial spirit with helping him navigate challenges in his acting career and giving him the confidence to pursue new opportunities independently. He emphasized, “There should be no mistake in hard work from my side. We have to give 100 percent. When we do that, the result will mostly be good: be it in films, business, philanthropy or love. Sometimes you get tired because of the workload. But when the team and people are so good, you join forces, contribute and they understand the vision.”
