The world is celebrating International Women’s Day today. This is the one day in the year when women are showered with endless praise, appreciation and affection. However, Bollywood singer Chinmayi Sripada has something more to say about it. The playback singer, who has superhit songs like ‘Titli’ from ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Man Mast Magan’ from ‘2 states’ and more to her credit, got candid in a recent conversation with us.
When asked her idea of celebrating Women’s Day, Chinmayi gave an answer that was not only brief and relevant, but also thought provoking.
“One of the greatest debates today is the pay-gap, in rural and urban India. Across the country, across industries, women are being paid 24-38% less for the same hours/work that men do. Less women on the board, less women making decisions… we need more women in the board room and more men at the kitchen table at home, more career advancement for women more domestic advancement for the men. I hope there will come a day when we don’t have to celebrate an international women’s day. A time when equality is the norm. Perhaps we could read in history books, in addition to everything from the struggle for women’s rights to suffrage, that there was a time when women’s day was celebrated to make women feel special”, said Chinmayi.
