‘Dhadak’, the debut film of late actress Sridevi’s daughter Janhvi Kapoor, finally released yesterday, July 20. The romantic drama is an adaptation of hit Marathi flick, ‘Sairat’ and also stars Shahid Kapoor’s brother Ishaan Khatter. The Shashank Khaitan directorial that had released in 2235 screens across the country, has fulfilled all the expectations as has gone on to mint Rs. 8.71 crores on its first day.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to share the figures of the film with a post that read, “#Dhadak takes a HEROIC START… Rarely does a film starring absolute newcomers open so well… Day 1 is higher than #StudentOfTheYear [₹ 8 cr]… Fri ₹ 8.71 cr. India biz.”

In terms of newcomers, it is the best opening day film ever, beating the other films that have marked the debut of newcomers. The Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra starrer, ‘Student Of The Year’ had minted Rs. 7.52 crore nett in 2012. The same year Arjun Kapoor’s debut film, Ishaqzaade had collected Rs. 4.48 crore. Tiger Shroff’s debut film ‘Heropanti’, that released in 2014, had minted around Rs. 6.51 crore. In 2015 Sooraj Pancholi’s ‘Hero’ had grossed Rs. 6.69 crore.
‘Dhadak’ also stars Ashutosh Rana, Kharaj Mukherjee and Aditya Kumar. The story of the film is about two lovers, Parthavi Singh (Janhvi Kapoor) and Madhukar Bagla (Ishaan Khatter), who belong to different castes. All hell breaks loose when Parthavi’s family discovers their liaison and the couple is forced to elope.
The opening day collection ensures that the movie is off to a good start. Let us see how it fares over the weekend now.
