The 69th National Film Awards are expected to be announced on August 24 and there is a huge buzz around who will take the prestigious honour home. Amongst the names of probable winners, one name doing the rounds is of Alia Bhatt. The actress gave an impeccable performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi last year. She swept up all the awards this season for the same. But will Alia Bhatt also add another honour to the list with her first National Award?
Alia Bhatt in the running for a National Award
It has been 11 years since Alia stepped into Hindi films and in this while she has shown an exponential growth. She has emerged out to be one of the, if not the, finest actresses of this generation. Right from her second film Highway to her latest offering Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Alia has never disappointed with her histrionics.
Last year, she gave one of the finest performances in Indian cinematic history in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. She got all the deserved appreciation, especially as everyone doubted her capability to pull off such a role. There were naysayers saying she looked too young and innocent for the part, but she proved them wrong. She also deservedly swept up the award season this year.
Alia Bhatt’s box office prowess
Not just critically, but Alia’s performances have brought in numbers too. Last year itself, when things were so uncertain at the box office, Alia gave 3 films that got the cash registers ringing. First was Gangubai Kathiawadi itself. It became one of the few female-led films to break the Rs 100 crore barriers, that too with 50 percent theatre occupancy in most parts. Then, she was a part of the global phenomeon RRR. Her last release of 2022 was Brahmastra, which again performed well at the BO. This year too, Rocky Aur Rani brought in good numbers.
Alia has been proving her mettle as a critical and commercial actress with each film. Her track record boasts some impressive outputs. After giving some award-winning performances in films like Udta Punjab, Raazi and Gangubai Kathiawadi, it seems like a National Award is something she deserves more than something she wants. The actress has been shattering people’s bias and prejudices. A National Award will just further strengthen her position as one of the best Indian cinema has ever had.
