In the last few years, Bollywood’s young brigade has changed the rules of the game. And of course, when I am talking about the young brigade, I am talking about the supremely talented actors of the current generation comprising of Vicky Kaushal, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao, Varun Dhawan, Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor to name a few.
Powerhouse performers like Vicky Kaushal and Ayushmann Khurrana have not even completed a decade in this industry. However, they have already proved their mettle. Both of them recently won the coveted National Award for their terrific performance in ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ and ‘AndhaDhun’ respectively. That award in itself is a testimony to the fact that the young brigade of Bollywood has brought in the much-needed paradigm shift.
Today, we don’t need a star to sell a good story. Filmmakers are investing in actors (and not the stars) to take their stories to the masses. Time and again, it has been proved that ultimately ‘Content is the King’. Now, our filmmakers have started to understand its importance in the true sense. Over the last few years, we have seen how Bollywood is blindly following the herd mentality of churning out mindless masala films. Thankfully, on the other hand, some filmmakers have pushed the envelope and brought out fresh content on the table.
Actors like Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal have taken the onus of headlining powerful and unconventional stories where they can put their heart and soul. We recently saw Rao starring alongside Kangana Ranaut in Prakash Kovelamudi’s ‘Judgementall Hai Kya’. Now, these days, everyone wants to play the meaty role in a given film. However, artists like Rao have proved that the marriage of talent and the right role (the length is irrelevant) is undisputed. ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ and ‘Stree’ are the films which prove that Rao is capable of pulling off anything and everything. He has already bagged the National Award for his portrayal of the title character in Hansal Mehta’s biographical drama ‘Shahid’.

With every passing day, Ayushmann is proving how no one can beat him when it comes to picking up the most intriguing and unconventional stories. Ayushmann is the new age superstar who has earned every single moment of his fame on the basis of his pure talent. His previous films, based on the issues of sperm donation, fat-shaming, erectile dysfunction, casteism and mid-age pregnancy, are all rooted in the heartland of India and they are something that everyone can easily relate to. Interestingly, his upcoming films revolve around a set of topics that are usually brushed under the carpet. A gay love story and premature balding are the issues which will be highlighted in Khurrana’s upcoming films. So get ready to be bowled over by him all over again.

With ‘Uri’, Vicky proved that he is capable of pulling off a film on his shoulder. In just four years, he has established himself as a bankable actor. Now, this is a remarkable feat that very fewer actors can boast of. On top of that, the National Award is a validation of his acting genius. His upcoming projects include films like ‘Bhoot’, ‘Sardar Udham Singh’ and ‘Takht’ to name a few. All of these films belong to various genres so that showcases how this young brigade of Bollywood doesn’t believe in following the motto of ‘go with the flow’. In fact, whatever they have achieved today has been done by ‘going against the flow’. These actors have made it clear that it’s one’s talent and not a ‘surname’ that takes you places.

Last year, we saw the Khans of Bollywood facing a tough time despite making big-budget films. Their stardom could not sustain them at the box office as the audience is no longer the one which will blindly follow their stars and not question what they are being offered.
Now, keeping the nepotism debate aside, we have some great actors like Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh who (despite belonging to the industry) have made it on the basis of their talent. These actors too have shown how acting comes naturally to them. They totally deserve all the praise and love showered upon them by the masses and the critics alike.

In the coming days, this young brigade will completely rewrite the rule books and that is the day we cinephiles are eagerly looking forward to.
