shahid kapoor, deva, shahid kapoor in deva

Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde’s latest cop drama, Deva, has struggled to make a mark on its opening day at the domestic box office. Despite decent footfall in urban centres, the film underperformed in mass circuits, leading to a disappointing first-day collection.

Deva earned only ₹5.5 crore on its opening day in India, logging an overall occupancy of 10.24% on its first Friday. This figure falls significantly short compared to the opening of Varun Dhawan’s action film Baby John, which had collected ₹11.25 crore on its first day but ultimately failed to recover its budget.

According to box office tracking site Sacnilk, Deva’s morning shows had an occupancy of 5.87%, followed by 9.18% for the afternoon screenings. Evening show occupancy was recorded at 9.77%, while night shows saw a slight increase at 16.15%. While the film’s performance on day one was underwhelming, it remains to be seen if it will gain momentum over the first weekend.

Mixed Reviews on the film

The film has opened to largely mediocre reviews, with critics and audiences expressing disappointment. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh described Deva as “engaging in parts with some brilliantly executed sequences” but criticised its “lengthy first half, slow-paced second half, and inconsistent writing.” However, he praised Shahid Kapoor’s performance, calling it one of his best.

Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, Deva features an ensemble cast, including Pavail Gulati, Pravesh Rana, Kubbra Sait, Girish Kulkarni, Manish Wadhwa, and Gaurav More. Despite its star power and the intrigue surrounding its adapted storyline, the film has failed to make a strong impact at the box office.

As the weekend progresses, industry insiders will be closely watching whether Deva manages to recover from its slow start and attract more audiences to theatres.
