Vidya Balan

Our film industry has two sides to it; hit and flop. Crucially defined by the commercial aspect of a movie more than its critical aspect, our industry works on the fundamentals of delivering a hit in terms of box office success. There have been some movies which have flown smoothly in terms of their basic story-line, yet they did not manage to garner the desired numbers at the box office. And then, there were those that worked despite being a no-brainer. Discussing about gender specifics, the industry has been male-dominated to a great extent, but times have changed and for good. Actresses like Vidya Balan have managed to break this stereotypical image, by churning out a good massy stories with good content, single-handedly.

From a ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Ishqiya’, ‘The Dirty Picture‘ to a ‘Kahaani‘, Vidya Balan has time and again managed to enthrall and engage the viewers with some strong women-oriented characters and proved that you definitely don’t need a superstar to back your movie. However, there comes a time in an actor’s life when he or she experiences a lull period and it has somewhat been the case for the award-winning actress. Post the thriller ‘Kahaani’ which released in 2012, there hasn’t been a hit for her. While she has given her 100% to every movie, which included getting into the garb of a beggar as well (‘Bobby Jasoos’), things just didn’t turn around for the talented performer.

So now, as she is up and about promoting her soon-to-release movie ‘Tumhari Sulu’, the question that arises in our overtly curious and impatient minds, is, “Will this movie turn the tables for the actress?”, “Will it provide to be the ultimate game-changer for Vidya?” If you’ve seen the trailer, songs and the posters, you would realise that ‘Tumhari Sulu’ is a slice-of-life entertainer wherein Vidya as a housewife takes up the job of a radio jockey for a late night show and her comical yet endearing character seems to be impressing the audiences. The movie not just seems high on content but also a crowd-puller, what with some catchy songs and funny dialogues from the actress. Also, another big advantage for the movie is that even before its release, it has already managed to earn a good deal. The movie is made on a budget of Rs 17 crore has been monetised extensively by means of pre-licensing of international, music, digital and satellite rights, and in-film brand associations, making the break-even requirement from the domestic box office very low. Another element is that the movie doesn’t have any hardcore competition from a biggie, so yes that is also an important component which will contribute to making this one a success.

Well, we have decoded various reasons already now. We have our hopes pinned on this one, and wish that it turns the tables at the box office panel, for Vidya.
