EXCLUSIVE: Akshay Oberoi on facing judgments for getting married early, says, ‘Log kehte the pagal ho tum’

Akshay Oberoi made his film debut in Sooraj Barjatya’s Isi Life Mein. He later appeared in films like Pizza, Piku, Fitoor, Bombairiya, Junglee, and others. The actor recently delivered a terrific performance as Basheer Khan aka Bash in Siddharth Anand’s Fighter. On the personal front, Akshay is married to Jyothi Vynatheya and they have a son. Now, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Akshay recalled his initial days.

Akshay Oberoi on getting judged

For the uninitiated, Akshay married Jyothi, four months after the release of his debut film Isi Life Mein. The actor revealed that he was questioned for getting married early. Akshay said, “Uss time pe mujhe yaad hai log kaha karte the ki tum shaadi kar rahe ho, Rajshri ke hero ho, romantic lead mein launch hue ho. Pagal ho tum. Par mera manna ye tha ki koi mujhe janta nahi hai. Who film chali hai, kum se kum ye toh chahti hai mujhe, mein shaadi toh kar lu. (At that time, I remember people used to say that you are getting married, you are the hero of Rajshri, you have been launched as a romantic lead. You are mad. Bu I thought no one knows me. The film didn’t work, at least she likes me, and I should get married).”

Akshay added, “And I remember uss time pe somebody said pagal log hai ye sab, Shah Rukh Khan ne Shaadi kar li thi jab woh star bhi nahi tha. So, I realised that ye sab awaaze hai. This is noise. And you have to filter all this out and that was my first example. So, uss time pe jab ye cheeze boli gayi thi mujhe. Ye advice di gayi thi mujhe, ab kitna change aya hai industry mein. (And I remember at that time someone said that these people are mad. Shah Rukh Khan got married when he was not even a star. I realised all of this is noise. At that time, all these things were said to me. I was given this advice, but now everything has changed in the industry).”

The actor went on to added, “Ab Alia Bhatt shaadi karke, baccha bhi paida karke, wapas kaam pe jaati hai (Alia Bhatt got married, had a baby, and she goes back to work). She repeats her own clothes. All changes as time goes on. And I’m so glad ki uss time pe maine kisiki baat nahi suni (I’m so glad that I didn’t listen to anyone).”

Talking about Fighter, it also stars Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, and Karan Singh Grover.
