EXCLUSIVE: Amit Sial admits REJECTING Irrfan Khan’s role in Slumdog Millionaire; says, “Mujhe uska importance samajh nahi aaya”

Actor Amit Sial is a well-known name in Bollywood and the Hindi digital place thanks to his impressive filmography. The actor has starred in films and web series such as Mirzapur, Maharani, Inside Edge, Raid, Guddu Rangeela, Love Sex Aur Dhokha and more. During an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Bubble, the actor got candid about many things, including rejecting Slumdog Millionaire and being approached for another in Mirzapur.

Amit Sial on rejecting Irrfan Khan’s role in Slumdog Millionaire

Talking about being approached for a part in Slumdog Millionaire, Amit Sial said, “I remember Danny Boyle had come for Slumdog Millionaire to me and we were supposed to do a film. But later he said that the part I auditioned for looked a bit older for that. I was desperate to do it so I assured him that I would lose weight and look young for the par. He then said something amazing to me. Later, he said a very beautiful thing, ‘We know you can do it, but what about the maturity? You have so many years of experience, how will you reduce that when you act? You’ll end up just acting.’”

When asked which role it was, Amit replied, “It was Dev Patel’s elder brother Salim’s character.” The role was ultimately played by Madhur Mittal.

Amit on being offered another role in Danny Boyle’s film

Talking about being approached for another role in the Oscar-winning film, Amit Sial said, “Phir mujhe message aaya ki woh jo police wala hai na, jo interrogate karta hai, jo baadme Irrfan Khan ne kiya tha, woh karoge kya? To mujhe uska importance script mein samajh nahi aaya. Shayad us waqt itni akal nahi thi, aur mujhe laga ki yaar ye to kuch hai hi nahi, to bas question poochta hai. (I didn’t understand its importance in the script at that time. I thought, ‘This character doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all, he just asks questions).'”

The actor continued, “He even insisted that I do that role but I didn’t do it. Then I saw Irrfan Khan doing the role and creating magic in it. But I think whatever happens, is for the best.”

Amit on auditioning for Mirzapur

Amit Sial – who is known for playing Inspector Maurya in Mirzapur, revealed that his performance in Inside Edge helped him bag this role. However, he added that was initially offered to play Munna Bhaiya in the show – the character was ultimately essayed by Divyenndu Sharma. He shared, “In fact, Mirzapur mein mujhe bola gaya tha ye Munna karne ke liye. Considering obviously Pankaj ka beta to nahi lag sakta main, toh woh nahi ho paaya. Aur wo achha hua nahi hua, kyunki usmein ek nayi energy chahiye thi. Aur main ye Munna type ka jo role hai na, woh Inside Edge mein kar chuka tha. (In fact, for Mirzapur, I was told to consider doing Munna’s role. Considering that I didn’t fit the bill as Pankaj’s son, it didn’t work out. And it was good that it didn’t happen because it needed a new energy. I had already done a Munna-type role in Inside Edge).”
